Chief Justice John Roberts on Tuesday ordered an investigation into the unprecedented leak of a draft opinion suggesting the Supreme Courtroom is poised to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion nationwide.
Roberts slammed the leak as an “egregious breach of belief” within the excessive courtroom’s first public remark because the draft opinion was printed by Politico late Monday.
“Though the doc described in yesterday’s stories is genuine, it doesn’t characterize a choice by the Courtroom or the ultimate place of any member on the problems within the case,” Roberts mentioned in a press release.
“To the extent this betrayal of the confidences of the Courtroom was meant to undermine the integrity of our operations, it won’t succeed. The work of the Courtroom won’t be affected in anyway.”
He added: “I’ve directed the Marshal of the Courtroom to launch an investigation into the supply of the leak.”
The bulk opinion was written by Justice Samuel Alito and leaked in a rare breach of Supreme Courtroom process that instantly sparked political outrage and protests exterior the courtroom.
